How To Set Up MetaMask for Fantom Network (2022)

I will show you how to set up MetaMask wallet for the Fantom (FTM) network and use it to manage FTM cryptocurrency and access DApps.

You will be able to send, receive, store FTM cryptocurrency, connect to DApps deployed on the Fantom blockchain and the other supporting the Fantom network and it’s tokens. You can also connect MetaMask with Ledger hardware wallet to keep your FTM 100% safe.

Set Up MetaMask For Fantom Network

1. Install the MetaMask Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox Browser Extension, open it and Create a wallet.

Set up the MetaMask wallet password. Write down the recovery phrase, which is a form of your private key and you keep it in the safe place in order to recover the wallet if needed. If anyone get in posses over it you lose all your cryptocurrency.

Important:

This is the difference between software and hardware wallets. Private key proves your ownership over the the wallet and cryptocurrency on the blockchain where it is stored and is your digital signature for the transactions while the public key creates public addresses. Software wallets show it to you on a device and it’s the piece of information that can be snitched like all other information from your device anytime by the hackers.

On the other hand the hardware wallets show your recovery phrase on the physical device itself that’s why they are also called the cold storage and protect the private key inside the safe chip where the transactions are signed internally using your private key which is never exposed and manually by you. Some use special bare steel metal cases which are waterproof, fireproof even if your house burns down knowing that it is the most important thing in order to keep your cryptocurrency safe.

It’s also the reason why good software wallets like MetaMask provides the hardware wallet integration for it’s users. And why Fantom forged partnership with Ledger which supports FTM token so you can connect to it’s platform and DApps directly.

2. In MetaMask click the Networks tab where it currently says Ethereum Mainnet and click Custom RPC

3. Enter the following Fantom Network information and click Save.

Network Name: Fantom Network

RPC Url: https://rpc.ftm.tools/

ChainID: 250

Symbol: FTM

Block Explorer URL: https://ftmscan.com/

That’s it. You can now see Fantom Network in the Networks tab.

It should be checked in order to use it every time you perform operations on the Fantom Network (Opera Mainnet) from the MetaMask wallet. And this is your Fantom network account. You can see the accounts on every network selected by tapping the top right Accounts circle button also.

You are now ready to use MetaMask wallet for the Fantom network.

You can use MetaMask also (you switch to Ethereum Mainnet network in MetaMask and it will land there) to receive Fantom FTM ERC20 token, and Multichain Fantom Bridge to exchange for FTM on Fantom network.

You can store, receive, send FTM ERC20, however you are not able to use this FTM ERC20 on the Fantom DeFi platform, like stated:

Obviously only FTM tokens on the Fantom network can be used for staking, minting fBUSD etc on the DeFi platform. This is my Ledger Fantom wallet I use on the Fantom official DeFi platform.

Connect MetaMask To Ledger Nano X Hardware Wallet (Optional but Recommended)

Since Fantom network is compatible with the ETV – Ethereum Virtual Machine and so is the Binance Smart Chain (how to set MetaMask for Binance Smart Chain is explained here), you can also connect MetaMask to Ledger Nano X hardware wallet like I did.

1. You install Fantom app in the Ledger Live software used to communicate with your Ledger Nano X device and can connect directly to Fantom DeFi Platform. You will be offered same set of accounts – addresses from Ledger device just like in MetaMask.

You can connect Ledger Nano X hardware wallet to MetaMask as a third party software wallet and do the same.

1. Install Fantom app- wallet in Ledger Live from the Apps catalog.
2. Open Ledger Nano X Fantom app.

2. In MetaMask click top right accounts button where you will see the Account for Fantom we just created and click Connect Hardware Wallet.

2. Select Ledger and click Continue.

3. Select one of the accounts provided by Ledger device you want to use (we are now exporting the public key) and this would be the public address also. Click Unlock.

And Done. You can now use your MetaMask Fantom Ledger Account.

And this is your MetaMask’s Fantom’s Ledger account public address to receive and manage FTM but also connect to Fantom Defi Platform and DApps using the 100% safe environment of the hardware wallet.
